Given Java has a reputation for not being as fast as C++ it makes sense to shift the 'once per game loop' calculations of object's positions to the GPU. I am not actually sure this is a good solution because the vertex shader has to perform the same calculations once per game loop per vertex... but anyhoo, it is a good tutorial for learning how to set up uniform shader variables (several days work figuring that out).
